A look inside Beckett Locke Aparthotel Dublin

DBFL provided civil and structural engineering services for Beckett Locke, working with Bennett Construction to develop and design the structural solution for the 8-storey aparthotel located beside the 3 Arena and Luas terminus in the Dublin Docklands.

The €35M development consists of 241 aparthotel rooms, varying from studio to one and two bed units with associated kitchenettes.  Ground floor facilities include a reception, bar, restaurant, meeting rooms, gym and co-working space.  The rooms on the upper floor are situated around a central lightwell that provides light to both the rooms and the ground floor lobby which has a 20m x 12m feature roof light overhead at first floor. The steel members to the roof light were specially designed with the glazing specialist to meet strict deflection criteria.

The structural form is that of an in-situ reinforced concrete frame with flat slab construction. The exposed concrete slabs, columns and core walls are incorporated into the interior design and thus, the quality of concrete finishes were achieved to an exceptionally high standard. The building is founded on reinforced concrete ground beams and pile caps spanning between reinforced concrete continuous flight auger piles to specialist design. The facade is a mix of SFS faced with a brick outer leaf and full height glazing/spandrel panel elements.

The development incorporates Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) in the form of a green roof and a rainwater harvesting system to collect run off from the roof and supply water to the WCs throughout the Aparthotel. The rainwater harvesting and attenuation tanks  are constructed beneath the ground floor slab of the central void lobby.
