The overall objectives of the proposals for Ashbourne were to:

-Improve the cycling environment in the centre of Ashbourne;

-Improve the pedestrian environment in the centre of Ashbourne;

-Provide for consistent journey times and minimise delays and lower the impact of congestion on the town environment

-Provide a safer environment for all road users;

-Improve traffic signalisation within the town;

-Provide for a balance with car movement and access;

-Promote sustainable transport.

To this end, DBFL’s traffic and transportation team produced preliminary and detailed designs for enhanced pedestrian and cycle facilities within the study area to accommodate the increased levels of travel demand generated by a significant increase in the local residential population. The scheme included extensive public consultation with locals and elected representatives.

The designs produced by DBFL were developed in conjunction with MCC and NTA representatives and included the signalised upgrade of a number of junctions using the SPOT Utopia UTC system. The scheme also comprised of an enhanced public lighting provision as well as an extension to MCC’s fibre optic communications network.
