Dorset Point

This student accommodation facility on Dorset Street provides 447 student bed spaces on a brownfield site in Dublin’s city centre. The accommodation is up to 6 storeys high with retail units and gym at ground floor level as well as a café, social interactive space for students and external landscaped courtyards.

A reinforced concrete frame with flat slabs was used where repeated floor plates enabled fast track construction. No downstands enables services to pass unobstructed in ceiling voids. Provision of lightweight external wall construction improved thermal performance and also speed of construction.

No carparking is provided on the site and this required detailed discussions with the Transportation Department of Dublin City Council where two disabled on-street parking spaces were agreed with a set down space for delivery vehicles.

In the provision of civil, structural and transportation engineering services this included 3D Tekla modelling to be used to develop an efficient design of the concrete frame. The project was completed 3 months ahead of schedule to facilitate the letting of rooms for the summer holiday period.
