DBFL have delivered Phase 1 of the  detailed design of a pedestrian and cycle route for Cork County Council connecting Ballinacurra, Midleton and Water Rock including the residential areas in Ballinacurra and future residential development in Water Rock with the Town Centre. The scheme connects Gaelscoil Mhainistir Na Corran with the Town Centre via an off-road greenway. The planned route between Ballinacurra, Midleton and Water Rock connects a number of residential developments with Midleton town centre as well as primary and secondary schools in the area.

Project Overview

This pedestrian and cycle route from Ballinacurra to Midleton on the R630 and the L3621 Bailick road, on Riverside way along the west side of the Owenacurra River to the northern relief road linking to Waterock and the Midleton Train station. The total planned route will be 6.0km in length and passes through the townlands of Ballinacurra, Midleton, Broomfield West, Knockgriffin, Townparks, Castleredmond, Loughatalia, Garryduff, and Oatencake and will eventually link to the Midleton-Youghal Greenway which is currently being developed by Cork County Council.

The total completed project will involve approx 1.5km of segregated cycle facilities, 3.1km of shared pedestrian and cycle facilities and 2.4km of greenway with ducting and public lighting. Fourteen pedestrian crossings (Toucan controlled and uncontrolled) are planned along the route with traffic calming measures and three bus stop upgrades.

Phase 1 of this project is complete at 1.2km long and provides pedestrian crossings; bus stop upgrades; traffic calming gateways consistent with DMURS; Raised pedestrian priority crossings and road-grade level pedestrian/cycle facilities across accesses and junctions; signalised crossings; parking reconfiguration; public lighting and CCTV; pedestrian and cyclist bridge; watercourse crossings requiring Section 50 Approvals; furniture, branded signage, interactive visual displays, wayfinding, and cycle/pedestrian aids; and extensive landscaping and public realm enhancement throughout.
