Client: Kildare County Council
DBFL provided civil and transportation engineering services for Kildare County Council’s Craddockstown Active Travel and Safe Routes to School scheme in Naas.
The 0.4 km project involved the partial realignment of Craddockstown Road between the Ballycane Road junction, Naas Community National School and Craddockstown Education Campus. The scheme was designed to improve safety, accessibility and connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists, with particular emphasis on journeys to and from the local schools.
The completed works include two-way cycle tracks, footways on both sides of the road, a raised toucan crossing, traffic-calming measures, Safe Routes to School markings and bollards. Raised entry treatment at an existing junction provides a continuous level crossing for pedestrians and cyclists, helping to create a more coherent active travel route.
DBFL provided Designer, Employer’s Representative, site supervision and PSDP services throughout the detailed design, tender, construction and handover stages. The works were constructed by Clonmel Enterprises Ltd.
The scheme provides safer and more accessible active travel infrastructure for the Craddockstown and wider Naas community.
The project involved delivery of a new active travel scheme within a very constrained existing road corridor while respecting existing boundaries. The main corridor realignment had to take into account the existing road levels while maintain traffic flows. The adjacent existing school was also an important factor in the final design.
A number of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) were used on site including permeable paving, rainwater butts, Cellular Attenuation and Infiltration Systems, and petrol interceptor. The Greater Dublin Strategic Drainage Study (GDSDS) and CIRIA Design Manuals C697 and C609 were used to design the surface water drainage system within the site.
