A landmark 17-storey glazed residential tower on the corner of Pearse Street and Grand Canal Dock, Alto Vetro comprises 26 triple aspect apartments with cantilevered balconies overlooking the water. Two apartments per floor are arranged around a single core on the lower levels with two duplexes on the two uppermost levels. The roof is given over to a roof garden, protected by a 2m high glass balustrade, and a private gymnasium.
Some engineering challenges that DBFL successfully addressed included the design for very limited site space, construction of a basement immediately adjacent to the canal basin and design of a stabilising open sided feature concrete stair core.
Further work included large balconies and slender floors to maximise floor to ceiling potential. The design adopted was one of a steel frame connected to the central concrete core. Floors were constructed using a composite flooring deck.
