Kilmainham Gaol and Kilmainham Courthouse were completely refurbished in time for the 1916|2016 centenary celebrations, with DBFL providing civil and structural engineering services.
For the civil and structural works at Kilmainham Courthouse, the following tasks were undertaken:
The installation of a passenger lift, platform lift, and ambulant disabled stairs. A new concrete ground floor was installed in part of the Courtroom. A steel access bridge was constructed at the first-floor level, linking the West Wing and the East Wing with new door openings at either end of the bridge. Existing strengthening works to the stone stairs at the northwest corner of the Courthouse were modified, and the stairs underwent load testing. A new rooflight was installed, along with granite paving and steps. A limecrete floor slab was installed in the Entrance Hall of the Courthouse and in the outbuilding. Remedial works were carried out on the metal railing and stone wall along Inchicore Road and SCR. Additionally, foul and surface water drains were installed.
For the civil and structural works at Kilmainham Gaol, the following tasks were undertaken:
Paving, ramps, and steps were installed in the Yard. A new door opening was constructed in the Museum building, leading into the Yard. Protective steel fencing was installed beside the basement area in the East Wing of the Gaol. Foul and surface water drains were installed in the Yard and connected to manholes in the Courthouse site.
