DBFL's Role Transport Engineers
Value €18m
Location Templeogue
Status Detailed Design/Construction

Client: South Dublin County Council

DBFL were appointed by South Dublin County Council to undertake the Feasibility & Options Assessment, Preliminary Design, Detailed Design, Construction and Handover for the Wellington Lane Walking and Cycling Scheme.

Project Overview

Since appointed, the scope and extents of the original scheme have been increased to include a number of schools within the area where DBFL are utilising the Safe Routes to School measures.

The scheme was awarded Part 8 Planning approval in January 2023 and is currently at Detailed Design stage.

As part of this scheme, DBFL engaged with many stakeholders, including the National Transport Authority, Dublin Bus, local business owners, local schools and residents. DBFL undertook a number of public engagements and consultations during the early stages of the scheme in order to obtain local feedback and inform the design process. The Wellington Lane Walking and Cycling Scheme will provide high quality walking and cycling infrastructure along a number of local and urban roads in Templeogue.

These facilities have the aim of providing high quality sustainable transport options for local residents to avail of to encourage an uptake in active travel and reduce overall car use. The facilities will also accommodate commuter cyclists, however, the overarching target user will be local users within the area travelling to the shops, schools, sports pitches etc.

The Challenges

A particularly busy roundabout is included within the overall scheme extents. This roundabout has been frought with dangerous movements and has a number of serious and one fatal accident. It was a key requirement as part of this scheme to upgrade this roundabout and provide safe measures for pedestrians, cyclists as well as vehicles. The high traffic volumes and high pedestrian/cycle activity through the junction proved to be a challenge in terms of ensuring that all modes were catered for safely and adequately. Interim pedestrian and cycle crossing measures were put in place while the permanent scheme proceeded through the design and planning stages. Detailed traffic surveys as well as extensive junction analysis and option assessments were undertaken and a preferred junction arrangement was agreed with SDCC and the NTA.

The Outcome

The scheme delivers an enhanced public realm through greening along the entire corridor and includes further landscaping measures, as designed by Áit Urbanism & Landscape. The overall scheme includes a large number of trees to be retained as well as new trees proposed in order to provide a tree lined landscape along the route.

DBFL are providing a Safe Routes to School design (in accordance with the NTA) outside two schools in within the area. The measures proposed aim to provide safer access to and from schools for pupils walking and cycling.
