Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council sought DBFL’s expertise to improve existing junction layouts at the western entrance to Stillorgan Village. Phase 1 of the Stillorgan Village Area Movement Framework Plan set out to create a vibrant, multifunctioning gateway area into Stillorgan Village, addressing road safety concerns and providing for enhanced pedestrian and cycling connectivity in conjunction with Public Realm improvements developed by our partners Áit Urbanism + Landscape
DBFL produced a design which encourages movement, usability and accessibility for people of all ages by providing high quality crossing facilities and links along identified desire lines to serve schools, businesses and other village amenities. A pocket park provided within the centre of the scheme further enhances the regeneration of the area, whilst also providing a strong visual and sensory pathway into the village.
The proposed design needed to satisfy the conflicting functional requirements of pedestrians, cyclists and motorists within a busy village core area, whilst also delivering an enhanced Public Realm. In addition to improving the aesthetic quality of the area, the scheme had to address current deficiencies in terms of the access needs for a variety of road users including primary school pupils attending St Laurence’s directly adjacent to the scheme. Managing this interaction between different road users along the route and delivering an attractive, welcoming environment was one of the key challenges in undertaking the scheme.
The overall scheme delivers improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists through Phase 1 of the Stillorgan Village Area Movement Framework Scheme and the scheme forms a key sustainable initiative in this regard.
The scheme also incorporated improved public realm areas along the route. In particular, the area outside the vegetable and cycle shops was converted from an area for parking cars to an improved public realm location with planting and seating, removing car spaces for the area.
