Cork Active Travel Scheme

DBFL is delighted to have supported Cork County Council and the Cork Regional Design Office in developing the proposed Fernhill to Ringaskiddy Pedestrian and Cycle Route and progressing the scheme through the Part 8 statutory process.

The proposed route will provide approximately 5.5km of dedicated pedestrian and cycling infrastructure linking the Fernhill area of Carrigaline and Ringaskiddy.

Importantly, the route will strengthen sustainable connectivity between Carrigaline, one of Ireland’s fastest-growing towns, and Ringaskiddy, which is identified as a Strategic Employment Location in the Cork County Development Plan and a nationally significant employment centre. The project responds to the need for safe, high-quality access for people travelling to employment, education, amenities and services while supporting healthier and greener travel choices. The scheme has been developed to provide safer and more attractive active travel connections while contributing to a growing network of walking and cycling routes across Cork Harbour communities.

Key elements of the proposal include:
– New footpaths and shared pedestrian/cycle facilities
– Improved crossing points and junction treatments
– Public realm enhancements and landscaping
– Sustainable urban drainage measures
– New lighting, signage and safety improvements
– Reduced speed limits at key locations to improve safety for vulnerable road users

The scheme is now on public display as part of the Part 8 consultation process. We would encourage residents, businesses, community groups and all interested stakeholders to review the proposals and make a submission through Cork County Council’s consultation portal.
