DBFL provided design consultancy services through the detailed design, contractor procurement and construction stage for significant 220kV and 110kV High Voltage (HV) ducting and chamber infrastructure totalling over 6km in length. The project was delivered on behalf of Eirgrid/ESB (TSO/DSO).
The works involved incorporating HV infrastructure into a new roads scheme for which DBFL were acting as designers. Detailed 3D BIM modelling was carried out for the HV ductbanks in order to co-ordinate the horizontal and vertical duct routing within a congested urban service environment. Design solutions for constrained locations such as bridge crossings, service bottlenecks and service crossings were developed and agreed with the various utility and local authority stakeholders.
Deliverables included plan, long section and 3D model setting out information for the ductbanks and chambers. These detailed the varying cover depths, crossing clearances, ductbank cross sections, transitions and protection measures required along the routes.
In total the scheme will deliver 5 separate circuit sections consisting of two 220KV ductbanks in flat formation (length 2.5km), two 220KV ductbanks in trefoil formation (length 2.4km) and a 110KV trefoil formation (length 1.6km). The scheme also delivers 12 joint bays and associated comms & link chambers. Installation of the works as part of the road construction project offers significant cost savings and secures a co-ordinated corridor for the HV infrastructure within a densely serviced setting.
